Here you will find information for first-time workers at the SCCA races at Heartland Park, Topeka. If you have any questions that are not answered here, please contact the Specialty Chief or the Worker Co-ordinator.

How to get there
Directions to Heartland Park are here.

Where to stay
Motel – there are several motels close to the track.
At the track
if you have your own van, camper or RV, this is the best option. There is ample paddock space and electrical hookups are available (check with the track for availability and cost).
   Camping at the track is
a popular option for the financially challenged.

Flagging and Communications

Where to go:
The pavilion at the northwest corner of the paddock, between the restrooms and the grandstand.

When to be there:
The corner meeting usually begins 45 minutes before the start of the first session of the day.

What to bring:
While working corners, you will be exposed to all that the the Kansas climate can throw at you, so it's best to be prepared for anything.

Clothing
Long pants and shirts – cotton is better for breathing and fire retardation than polyester or nylon, white for cool and visibility. Most corner workers have white pants or overalls, but when you are starting out, an old pair of jeans and a t-shirt are just fine. Sweat pants are not recommended – they tend to fall down in moments of crisis!
Sturdy boots or shoes – something comfortable: you will be on your feet a lot. Hiking boots or trainers are best. No open-toed shoes or sandals.
Gloves – in case you need to push a hot car or pick up a hot car part. Some people prefer welder's gloves, but inexpensive leather gloves are fine.
Hat – to keep sun and rain off your head.
Sunglasses – so you look cool.
Rain suit – preferably white, or else a neutral color (e.g. blue, green). Please no bright orange or yellow.
Coat – if it's cold.
Gloves – besides the leather ones to keep your hands warm.

Tools and accessories
Whistle (on a breakaway lanyard) – so you can catch someone's attention.
Knife or cutting tool – used for an assortment of things, sometimes including racing incidents.
Rope (optional) – for pulling on racecars.
Paper and pen (optional) – for writing information on incidents or letters to friends.
Medications – any you need for yourself plus aspirin or Tums etc.
Bag – to carry all this stuff in.

Other things to keep you comfortable
Sunscreen – so the bugs don't have to feed on cooked meat.
Bug spray – to keep the dreaded bugs away.
Bandanna or towel – to wet and put around your neck.
Kleenex or toilet paper – just in case.
Small cooler – with drinks and snacks. Water is provided, but most people prefer to bring their own Gatorade, orange juice, or whatever. Carbonated drinks are not a great idea in the heat.
Extra pair of socks – for when it rains or is cold.
Binoculars – to observe the spectators.
Cup – water is usually provided but there is never a cup in sight.
Camera – just remember you are corner workers not paparazzi.
Watch – to time cars or just to know what time it is.
Toys – to entertain yourself and others between sessions.

Sound Control

Where to go:
The Sound Control Station on the southeast corner of the paddock.

When to be there:
Before the start of the first session of the day.

What to bring:
Clothing – as for Flagging and Communications.
Small cooler – with drinks and snacks.
Pen and paper – for when the ones in the sound control box disappear.

Timing and Scoring

Where to go:
The Tower at the north end of the drag strip.

When to be there:
30 minutes before the start of the first session of the day.

What to bring:
Clothing – whatever: you will be protected from the elements.
Small cooler – with drinks and snacks.
