The Kansas City Region's Solo (a.k.a. autocross) program typically includes eight events per year, which will prove challenging both to the beginner and seasoned contender. We are always on the lookout for new sites. If you know of anywhere that might work, let us know.
What is Solo? |
Solo is a test of driving skill and the car's agility in which one car at a time is driven over a clearly defined course, the elapsed time and penalties for course deviations being the determining factor for awards. Most Solo events take place in large parking lots, with the course defined by orange pylons. Speeds are limited to 60 mph and the hazards to spectators and participants do not exceed those encountered in normal, legal highway driving.
Classes exist for cars ranging from the competitor's daily driver on street tires to purpose built vehicles that are useless for anything else. |

Getting Started
What do you need to get started?--a car and a driver's license. Yes, that's about it! You don't even have to be a member to compete. A helmet is required, but we have loaners available if you don't have one.
Clean out the inside (fast-food wrappers, golf equipment, etc), remove the floor mats (they could get jammed under a pedal) and hub caps, check the brakes, oil, lug nuts, tire pressures and that the battery is secure, and you're ready to go. Before competing, all cars must undergo a technical inspection that covers most of these items, but if in doubt--ask.
Go kill some cones!
More information on getting started in Solo can be found at the SCCA National site and the Solo II Novice Handbook.
